Biography:
When Kenneth Miles Freeman was a mere six-year-old growing up in Chicago, his mother had already recognized his enthusiasm for and talent in art. One Saturday she took her wide eyed boy to the Art Institute of Chicago. Shortly thereafter he began art lessons. When he was eight he told his mother, "clear out the living room so I can have my studio." Ken commandeered the TV table for his palette and continues to use this same palette today. He announced that he would someday be a famous artist and that he would apprentice with Haddon Sundblom.
The sitters in this scene are Flint, a Comanche professor of Native American Culture, and a well known actor and personality, and Dee a Lakota Sioux. The scene depicts the marriage blanket, a Pendleton Chief's Blanket, wrapped around the couple, symbolizing the joining of two souls under Father Sky, and Mother Earth. The bride holds an Eagle feather wand.
First Lady Barbara Bush was sufficiently impressed with K.M. Freeman's southwestern art, that she invited him to show at the Smithsonian Institutes in conjunction with the planned Native American Museum extravaganza.

Potter sums up his artistic endeavors with this quote: "My subjects derive from symbol and myth (particularly the Odyssey), they are: a substitute for a lost language, records of a sacred history, truths that have nothing to do with fact. I work in oil pastel but, because of the density and richness of the finished surface, consider the work as paintings. My work is not planned; the images come from within, they surprise and sometimes shock me."
